About Me

Brookwood & Normandy Dog Training is run by me, Claire Woodard.

When I was born we already had a dog in the family, a Labrador cross called Tina, but it wasn’t until 1980 that I got involved in dog training with my mum when we fell in love with a rescued Labrador.

He was 10 months old & was as crazy as any 10-month-old puppy with no training. He was called Boris and was the beginning of our journey into dog training. We took him to classes in Brookwood, known then as Brookwood Dog Training Club, and these are the classes I now run. After a few years, we started going to obedience shows and found we quite enjoyed that side of it. As Boris was getting older & nearly ready to retire from competition mum decided to get a German Shepherd in 1985. By this time I was also hooked and was going to all the shows with her and tried competing in some of the fun classes.

In 1987 I was finally allowed a dog of my own, an English Springer I called Alpha. We competed together plus he did some acting and modeling too. 1987 was also the year mum and a friend of hers took over running the classes that we’d been going to for the last 7 years. I was also there as a helper, assisting them with a little teaching as well as talking to visitors about the classes. By 1997 I had already taken on a bigger role supporting her and that year I got a qualification from the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, which was exactly 10 years after mum had done. Mum continued to run the classes until 2001 when her health forced her to stop. I then took over running the classes and expanded creating Puppy classes as well as adding outdoor classes at Merrist Wood College. Another expansion has been to offer Home Visits and Workshops to teach you how to stop your dog pulling on the lead.

As well as running Brookwood & Normandy Dog Training I also spent a couple of years teaching for another club where I taught the Beginner Class. This included preparing them for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme Bronze Award. I am also an Ambassador for Butternut Box Dog Food.

Testimonials

Heather & Lucy (Labrador) 2019

Brookwood and Normandy Dog Training Club has a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.  Claire has a wealth of knowledge and experience and you can guarantee that she will be able help you conquer any concerns that you may have with your dog.  Claire is a very genuine dog lover and has a very calm and patient approach.  The class that we attended had a wide range of age groups (dogs and owners!) and it had a lovely family feel. We learnt so much during our beginner course with our 4 year old lab, it was just as enjoyable for us as it was our dog….especially the Christmas party!! Thank you Claire for all your guidance and expertise.

Natalie & Annabelle with Jazzy & Truffles (Cockerpoos)

Claire has helped us to train our 2 cockapoos Jazzy and Truffles who are quite mischievous sisters! She has an instant understanding of the dog’s personality and incredible patience with owners as well. There are some commands I keep on mixing (stay and wait) and she continues to help me with this with good humour. I am really impressed with her reading of the dogs and attention to detail. Dogs are always happy to come to training.

Jenny & Shelby (Labrador)

Shelby and I have been coming to lessons since September 2015. We enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the fact that the classes are not too big. Claire has a wealth of experience and it really shows in the fun but effective classes. We keep coming back because the mental stimulation is great for us both!

Louise & Mickey (Sprointer)

Claire was friendly but firm with our little puppy Mickey. She taught us how to engage him and provided us with lots of doggy activities, something he clearly loves and keeps him out of trouble. Now we have the tools to keep him occupied on walks and he gets to be the energetic, personable and fun dog he always has been!

Sue or Brian and Bernard (Labrador cross Mastiff)

Bernard has been attending Claire’s classes for the past five years. It is not that he is a slow learner. It is because he loves coming along each week to meet his friends. In fact, if there is a blank week he gets very upset. Bernard is a black Labrador cross Mastiff weighing 7 stone. When we first got him he was very headstrong and difficult to control. Under Claire’s guidance, he is much more obedient and loves doing his exercises as he knows that he will get a treat. Claire’s classes are a Godsend to us and to Bernard.

Hayley & Duke (Labrador)

We took our 9 month old puppy along to the Beginners’ course and absolutely loved it. We’ve seen real improvement in his obedience and also in his socialization. Claire is really patient and made us realise that a lot of where we were going wrong was our fault and not our dogs. We progressed to the Intermediate course and are loving it. Highly recommend!

Tony & Winnie (Staffie cross)

Winnie attended two courses in Brookwood in 2016. She was very hyper when she first went and just wanted to play with all the other dogs but with Claire’s experience in training Winnie has become a well behaved dog. Thanks Claire for all your patience with Winnie she is now different dog on her walks her recalls are brilliant as is her interacting with other dogs.

May & Artemis (Working Cocker Spaniel) 2023

Claire is very knowledgeable on dog training, dog safety, and general dog welfare. Claire is also very patient, Artemis and I have learnt a lot from these classes and I’ve gained a lot of confidence as a dog owner. From these classes, I have more confidence in Artemis’ abilities, and though she surprises me on some weeks Claire is always unsurprised by Artemis’ progress.
